PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks had a tough end to the UMES Tournament, falling to Cornell 6-2 and St. Peter's 12-3 in eight innings on Sunday. UMES falls to 1-11 on the year. Cornell and St. Peter's improve to 3-1 and 4-4 repsectively.

The game began as a pitching duel, with starters Jesus Hernandez (Haverstraw, N.Y.) (0-3) and Brent Jones throwing the first three innings without allowing a run. Hernandez did not allow a hit in this time either.

But in the fourth, Cornell's bats came alive. The Big Red loaded the bases with no outs. Hernandez struck out the next batter, but Ryan Plantier reached on an error to allow two runs to score. Next batter, Spencer Souza hit a two-run double for two more. A Brenton Peters RBI double made it 5-0 Cornell after three-and-a-half.

J.P. Black (Elkton, Md.) came in and pitched very well against the Big Red, not allowing a run in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

In the bottom of the seventh with two out, Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa) drove the ball to deep left for a double. Next batter, Thomas Gray hit a single to shallow left, scoring Breslin and putting the Hawks on the board. UMES trailed 5-1 after seven.

Cornell added a run in the top of the ninth off a Ben Swinford RBI ground out, scoring Kevin Tatum and making it 6-1 Big Red.

UMES tried to rally in the ninth, getting first and third with one out. Gray brought home Malik Wylie (Bronx, N.Y.) on a sacrifice fly to right, but it was not enough as UMES fell to Cornell 6-2 in the opening game.

The win went to starter Jones, who on a pitch count went three innings with four strikeouts and no runs. Hernandez got the loss, allowing five runs, just two earned, in 3.2 innings. Black went 4.1 innings without allowing a run across.

In game two, UMES took on St. Peter's in hopes to get a game. But the Peacocks started by rallying for nine runs in the opening five innings, including eight off UMES starter Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.), to lead early.

Down 9-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks finally got some hitting against St. Peter's starter Eric Mozeika (1-1). Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) led off the inning with a double, followed by a Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Del.) single to put runners on the corners. Wylie reached on a fielding error at short, allowing Campbell to score. Two batters after Joshua James (Milford, Del.) singled to load the bases, Dustin Aigner (Melfa, Va.) drew a walk to push across Fleetwood. With Tim Gray (Dover, Del.) batting, Mozeika made a throwing error towards second, allowing Wylie to score and make it 9-3 St. Peter's.

But the Hawks could not add anymore, and the Peacocks added two in the seventh and one in the eighth. After eight innings, the game was called due to darkness.

Mozeika earns his first win of the season with six innings pitched, giving up three runs with two strikeouts. Saca got the loss with four innings and was charged with eight runs, only seven earned.

Fleetwood hit 3-for-6 combined in the two games, adding a walk. Campbell also had three hits, scoring a run. Aigner just played in game two, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

UMES will hit the road on Wednesday, taking on George Washington in Arlington at 3:00 p.m.
