PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMES was unable to comeback after an opening five-run inning by the Peacocks as the Hawks fell to St. Peter's 7-4 on day two of the UMES Tournament. The Hawks fall to 1-9 while the Peacocks go to 3-3.

St. Peter's had its first four batters reach base and used six hits to score five runs in the first inning, including a two run double off for catcher James Smith_, for an opening 5-0 lead.

The Hawks got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second off St. Peter's starter John Leiter (1-0). UMES got three hits in the opening five batters to load the bases with no outs. Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) got hit by a pitch, followed by Joshua James (Milford, Del.) walking, bringing in two runs and making it 5-2 St. Peter's.

The Peacocks put on two more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out against UMES starter James Smith (Florence, S.C.) (0-2), Matt Speckman hit an infield single down the first base line to bring in a run. A subsequent throwing error on the same play brought in another run, making it 7-2 Peacocks lead.

Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, taking third on a ground out. With Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) batting, Campbell scored on a passed ball for a UMES run, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

A pitching duel ensued in the next couple of innings, with UMES relievers Michael Epps (Pittston, Pa.) and Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) and St. Peter's reliever Adam Purcilly not giving up any runs.

In the ninth, Campbell walked to open the inning and got to third on a pair of stolen bases. Schott brought him home two batters later on a ground out, but the Hawks were not able to muster any more offense and fell 7-4 to St. Peter's.

Leiter got the win after going five innings in his start, allowing three runs with four strikeouts. The loss went to Smith, who had seven runs, just six earned, in four innings. For UMES, Epps and Witte had three and two scoreless innings respectively.

Campbell reached base four times in the game, going 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases. Schott had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

For the Peacocks, Smith had two hits in four at bats, bringing in two runs and scoring one. Matt Mancini went 2-for-5 with two runs.

The Hawks will play a pair of games tomorrow to finish the UMES Tournament, taking on Cornell at 11:30 a.m. and Saint Peter's at 2:30 p.m.
