Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Dustin Longchamps went nine innings, allowing just one walk and striking out eight but it wasn't quite enough as Iona plated one run in the top of the tenth inning to win game one of a double header at Hawks Stadium on Homecoming. Longchamps didn't even allow a hit until the seventh inning of the nine inning affair and only allowed four total hits on the day.

Michael Willey took the loss for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) as he allowed Joe Lorenzo to single to lead off the inning. He would then steal second and be driven home on a Kevin McGovern single. That was enough as the Hawks couldn't answer in the bottom of the tenth, going in order.

Shawn Walsh picked up the win for Iona, their first of the season.

UMES only recorded four hits in game one, all singles and coming off of four different bats. Ken Richardson led off in the first with a single while Tyler Winch recorded one in the third. The Hawks got two hits in the ninth as Joel Gonzalez would get a two out single and move to third on a Hoban shot. A two out rally wasn't to be as Iona pulled reliever Bobby DiNuzzo for Walsh who subsequently struck out Josh Dean.

In game two the Hawks jumped out early, getting on the board with an Eric Gaines run. He led-off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Richardson. Gonzalez would reach on an error and push Gaines to third. After Gonzalez stole second Justin Hoban would walk to load the bases. Kevin Hillenburg picked up the only UMES RBI on the day with a ground out to first that plated Gaines.

Like, game one, the Hawks managed just four hits in the game. Gonzalez doubled in the third and Dean singled in the seventh and final inning. Winch had two hits in the game, both singles, coming in the second and fifth innings.

Iona scored three runs in the third and one in the fourth off of four total hits. They tallied eight in the game. Paul Salerno had a pair of hits on the day and Andrew Wernicki had two RBI on his single in the third. Marty Hand earned the win in game two while Kevin Carmody earned the first Gael save of the season. Mike Roberts took the loss, to drop to 0-3 on the season. He worked four innings and struck out three, allowing all four runs, three were earned. Willey worked the final three innings in relief.

The Hawks have cancelled their game tomorrow with the Gaels due to the expected inclement weather. They will be at home on Tuesday to face George Washington at 2:00 pm.
