Student Assistant Coach


Carl Huber is in his first season as student assistant coach with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team.

Huber will primarily be working with the pitching staff.

Huber was a four-time letterwinner with the Hawks from 2007-10 as a right-handed pitcher. He made 70 appearances, including 14 starts, throwing 101.1 innings. Huber compiled 80 strikeouts in his career.

Huber, a Mount Airy, Md., native, will graduate in May with a degree in exercise science.

2009: Was 0-2 in 15 outings, including three starts ... Had a 22.50 ERA, giving up 50 runs (all earned) on 35 hits in 20 innings ... Struck out 19 and walked 47 ... Fanned a season-high four batters twice (Feb. 25 versus Lehigh and May 2 against Longwood) ... Also threw a season-best 3.2 innings in the start on Feb. 25 against Lehigh ... Struck out two and walked one in an inning at home against Bethune-Cookman on April 25 ... Hit a pinch-hit two-RBI single against Florida A&M on April 18.

2008: Made 19 appearances, including 10 starts ... Was 1-9 with a 12.76 ERA and one complete game ... Threw 48.2 innings, giving up 66 hits and 94 (69 earned) ... Struck out 36 and walked 86 ... Threw a season-high six innings twice, at Savannah State (March 18) and at Coppin State (March 23) ... Struck out season-best five at Coppin State.

2007: Had one start and one save in 19 appearances on the mound ... Finished the season with a 17.47 ERA ... Gave up 37 runs (33 earned) and 31 hits ... Struck out eight and walked 22 in 17 innings of work ... Threw a season-high two innings on Feb. 9 at Old Dominion ... Did not allow a hit in five outings.

High School/Club: Received three varsity baseball letters at Linganore High School ... Received first team all-county honors in 2005 ... Named MVP and Pitcher of the Year during the same season ... Recorded a school-record 45 strikeouts as a senior ... In the classroom, was a four-year honor roll student ... Played for the Brunswick Express club team of the Blue Ribbon League in Western Maryland.

Personal: Born Nov. 11, 1987 in Mount Airy, Md. ... Son of David and Penny Huber ... Has three brothers, Davis, Jr., Cullen and Cody and two sisters, Ellie and Jessica ... Is an Exercise Science major.

Out of the Park: Best sports moment: In an 11-1 win against Catoctin High School, I pitched five innings and struck out eight, and went 5-5 with a home run, triple and three singles.

Most Influential Person: My father, he's been there and taught me everything.

When I graduate, I plan to: move to my own place, get married and become a top personal athletic trainer.

Best advice received/favorite saying: "I've found in life, the more you practice the better you get. If you want something enough and work hard to get it, your chances of success are greater."

Favorite book: The Mental Game of Baseball.

Personal athletic goal for the season: Maintain a positive attitude, have good numbers and help the team win.

Athletic goal before graduation: Leave UMES as a better ballplayer. Win MEAC Pitcher of the Year.

Hobbies outside of sports: video games, lifting, eating and drawing.

Personal athletic goal before graduation: Have at least 200 pitching strikeouts
