PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – For the fifth consecutive year, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will host the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The Hawks will host both races on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the UMES’ cross country course.

The women will open action at the event at 9:45 a.m. for their 5k race. The men will then start the second race at 10:30 a.m.

UMES is looking to build on its strong finish at last season’s MEAC championship race. The teams were led by Eunice Jones and Basil Melek, who each placed third at the event. The women finished third, men fourth and a total of three runners placed within the top-5.

Leading the way for the UMES this season are seniors Zavior Brown (Middletown, N.Y.) and Codjo Gbedo (New Carrollton, Md.). Brown has seen his share of success on the UMES Cross Country Course as he placed second (17:15) at the UMES Lid-Lifter 5k race earlier in the year. Gbedo finished under 30 minutes several times in the 8k race, including a 29:56.47 finish at the Cappy Anderson Invitational.

The women will be paced by freshman Petra Kubesova (Prague, Czech Republic) and sophomore Latitia Salley (Linden, N.J.).  Kubesova recently broke the program record at the Tribe Open with a second-place time of 21:51.98. Salley has been honored on numerous occasions as the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week and has posted several solid finishes for the Hawks this year.
