Sept. 24, 2012

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week were named today and seniors Melina Gallas (Paris, France) and Codjo Gbedo (New Carrollton, Md.) were selected as the two honorees for the week of September 24.  Gbedo receives the award for the second consecutive week, while Gallas is honored for the first time.

Gallas led the women’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Towson Invitational this past weekend. The Paris, France native finished the race with a time of 22:16.13, which was good for 27th place overall. Her placing was the highest of the day between the two teams, as she finished five seconds faster than the closest UMES women’s competitor.

For the second consecutive week, it was Gbedo that was the top performer for the men’s cross country team. He finished the Towson Invitational in 30th place with a time of 30:20.51. Gbedo’s effort propelled the UMES men to an eighth-place finish at the event, as he was the only male Hawk runner to finish within the top-30.
