Hawk men claim runners up at MEAC, women take sixth

SMYRNA, Delaware – The Maryland Eastern Shore men’s and women’s cross country teams battled valiantly for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title at the annual running of the conference championships. When all the races finished the Hawks emerged with a runners-up achievement by the men and a sixth place showing from the women.

Sophomore Sharon Jerop (Eldoret, Kenya), senior Oussama Chouati (Manresa, Spain) and sophomore Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) were named All-MEAC for their efforts. Jerop led the Hawks in the women’s 5K, running the event in 18:36.2, a season’s best to place sixth. Chouati took seventh in the men’s 8K with a time of 25:40.2, also a season high. Quinonero completed the 5K in 19:02.7 to finish tenth.

Other top performers include a trio of top 20 finishes by the men’s team. Senior Donovan Mundy (Jacksonville, Florida) ran the meet in 26:21.7 to claim 16th place, sophomore John Akakeya (Staten Island, New York) earned a time of 26:43.7 to finish 17th place, and senior Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya) finished in 27:07.50 for 20th place.

The men’s team totaled 84 points to earn their runner up spot, while the women’s earned 149 points to place sixth.

Norfolk State won the men’s meet and Florida A&M took the women’s meet for an unprecedented sixth straight year.

Maryland Eastern Shore’s runners will either look forward to a NCAA regional appearance in mid-November or the 2017-18 indoor track season, set to begin in December.
