PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --Competing in her first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship, Petra Kubesova of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore earned gold for the Hawks. Kubesova ran a time of 17:48.20 to take first place and lead the UMES women's team to a fifth place overall finish.

Kubesova, a freshman, ran in just one regular season meet before the conference championships Saturday. In that meet she finished second in the College of William and Mary Tribe Open.

The Hawks Latitia Salley and Jennell Wade finished 38th and 40th place, respectively, in times of 20:58.44 and 20:58.89. On the men's side, Zavior Brown placed 22nd in a time of 27:34.07. Teammate Codjo Gbedo had the Hawks second-best men's finish in a time of 29:12.93. Emilie Ducados battled to finish in a time of 21:23.46, to take 47th.

Taylor Folk and Paul Jerry finished their respective races in times of 21:46.43 and 30:45.05, respectively. Melina Gallas, Javierelle Turner, Kraig Webb and Aaron Chatman finished in close proximity. Gallas crossed in 21:50.20, while Turner, Webb and Chatman posted times of 31:15.94, 31:27.59 and 31:35.37, respectively.

Shaquille Turner, Alonzo Jarmon and Annis Mars finished for the Hawks in times of 32:00.43, 32:34.09 and 23:45.10. Nancy Yao posted a 25:22.77 to finish the women's race.



UMES will head to University Park, Pa. to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional meet November 9. The NCAA Championships will be held November 17 in Louisville, Ky.
