Jerop, Chouati lead Hawks to successful meet
Oussama Chouati won his first cross country meet as a Hawk

SMYRNA, Delaware — Sophomore Sharon Jerop (Eldoret, Kenya) and senior Oussama Chouati (Manresa, Spain) won their individual events at the DSU Pre-Conference Invite, and the Hawk men secured the top four spots on the way to a team victory during Saturday’s meet.

Jerop finished with a time of 19:35.8, earning her third victory this season. Chouati completed the 8k in 27:20.5 for his first collegiate cross country win.

Chouati was followed by sophomore Hector Cime (Parksley, Virginia) in second with a time of 27:27.6, fellow sophomore John Akakeya (Staten Island, New Yokr) in third at 27:34.6, and senior Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya) with his time of 27:57.6 to finish fourth.

Freshman Ngoy Yamitshi (Germantown, Maryland) finished eighth with a time of 29:12.3 to complete the men’s scoring. The Hawks triumphed with a 35 point margin, scoring 18 with Delaware State’s 53 points coming in a runner-up finish.



The Hawk women also enjoyed a successful meet with a second place effort of 55 points, narrowly edging Delaware State in third and falling just six points short of meet winners Morgan State.

Sophomore Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) placed third for the 5k meet with a time of 19:51.2. Senior Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, New York) came in 13th with a time of 22:22.6, senior Luan Gabriel (Roseau, Dominica) finished 18th in 23:24.7 and sophomore Amirah Jones (Suffolk, Virginia) placed 20th with a time of 23:27.7 to round out the women’s scoring.

Maryland Eastern Shore will head back to Smyrna for the DSU Alumni XC Run on October 13th.
