DOVER, Del. – For the second time in the past month, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s cross country team won a race hosted by Delaware State University as the Hawks blazed past the competition to win the Farm Run Invitational on Friday. The women’s team placed second amongst four teams as well.

The Hawks had four men place within the top-10 in the five mile race. The team finished with 39 points altogether, seven points better than the second-place school. All four teams in the race were Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools.

Freshman Khalil Rmidi (Malaga, Spain) led the charge with a second-place finish in 28:10.86, while freshman Derrick Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya) ran a 28:47.52 to take fifth. Freshman Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, Fla.) took home a sixth-place finish in 29:11.93, while senior Codjo Gbedo (New Carrollton, Md.) was ninth with a time of 30:43.83.

The top-5 for the Hawks was rounded out by senior Alonzo Jarmon (Bowie, Md.), who concluded the race in 32:45.58, good for a finish of 17th place. UMES also had two other runners compete in junior Javierelle Turner (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.), who finished in 21st and 22nd, respectively.

The women claimed 59 points in the 5k race, two better than the third-place finisher.

Much like Rmidi for the men, freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) has been the benchmark for the women’s team. She took sixth overall in the race with a time of 19:53.25, 30 seconds faster than UMES’ closest competitor.

Sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine, Jamaica) was seventh in 20:22.33, while junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) took 10th in 21:14.53. Sophomore Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 16th in 22:36.58. The Lady Hawks finished their scoring when senior Latasha Moore (Silver Spring, Md.) took 23rd in 25:14.93.

Morgan State won the women’s race with 15 points, while also taking second in the men’s portion. The Bears’ Ashley Seymour won the women’s race in 18:21.64, while Christian Smooth took home top honors in the men’s with 27:40.96.

The teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they compete in the Blue and Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Delaware in Newark, Del.
