SMYRNA, Delaware — The strong season for the Maryland Eastern Shore cross country team continued on Friday, as both the men’s and women’s teams placed second at the Delaware State Farm Run. Both squads came just a few points short of victory, with the women coming within four points with 45 and the men within six at 34.

The women’s strong performance was greatly aided by sophomore Sharon Jerop (Eldoret, Kenya) winning the 5k race with her time of 19:58.1. Her teammate and fellow sophomore Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) finished in second at 20:41.4.

Senior Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, New York), sophomore Amirah Jones (Suffolk, Virginia) and freshman Jessica Roney (Windsor Mill, Maryland) all placed in the top 20 and completed the Hawks’ point totals for the meet.

On the men’s side, their second place finish was due in large part of four Hawks finishing in the top ten. In fact, the quartet of senior Donovan Mundy (Jacksonville, Florida), sophomore Hector Cime (Parksley, Virginia), sophomore John Akakeya (Staten Island, New York) and senior Oussama Chouati (Manresa, Spain) took the third place time through the sixth place time, ranging from Mundy’s time of 16:37.2 to Chouati’s time of 16:41.4.

Senior Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya) placed 16th to finish fifth among the Maryland Eastern Shore men.

Morgan State won the ladies’ meet while Navy took the men’s meet.

Maryland Eastern Shore returns to Princess Anne next Saturday for the Cappy Anderson Invitational. Races will begin at 10 a.m. at The Pavilion.
