Men's Cross Country opens season with victory at home
Sharon Jerop won the women's race, continuing the strong start that she enjoyed in her freshman year

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The Maryland Eastern Shore men’s team won the Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter Saturday morning as four Hawks took the top four spots, winning the dual meet over Morgan State. Sophomore John Akakeya (Staten Island, New York) and sophomore Sharon Jerop (Eldoret, Kenya) won individually in their respective events.

Akakeya won the men’s 5k race with a time of 16:59.10, and was instantly followed by junior Donovan Mundy (Jacksonville, Florida) at 16:59.60 to finish second. Senior Oussama Chouati (Manresa, Spain) took third with a time of 17:00.30, and sophomore Hector Cime (Parksley, Virginia) came in at 17:00.80 to finish fourth.

Jerop won the women’s 5k with a time of 20:03 flat, and sophomore Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) joined her in the top five with a time of 21:29.10 to come in fourth place.

Senior Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya) rounded out the men’s scoring with a seventh place finish and sophomore Amirah Jones (Suffolk, Virginia), senior Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, New York), and senior Luan Gabriel (Roseau, Dominica) rounded out the women’s scores with a 10th, 11th and 13th finish, respectively.

The Hawk men scored 17 points to take the victory over Morgan State, while the Bears won the women’s event with 23 points over Eastern Shore’s 38 points.

The Shore travels to Smyrna, Delaware on September 9th for the Delaware State Hornets Invitational.
