Kerr (pictured) leads all Hawks with five victories this season

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. —After a great series of events at the Penn Relays where the Hawks brought home several top five and top ten relays, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track team heads to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the 2014 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Hosted by North Carolina A&T University, the meet will last three days starting tomorrow, May 1st, at 1:00pm with the Decathlon for men and Heptathlon for women and concluding at 7:30pm with the 5000 meter run. Friday will see two sessions, one starting at 9:00am with more Decathlon/Heptathlon events and some field events, and a second session of track events running from 2:50pm 5:00pm with semi-final races. The meet concludes on May 3rd with field events starting at 9:00am and track events at 1:00pm, with an awards ceremony following Saturday’s events.

The meet will be held on the Irwin Belk Track which is located inside Aggie Stadium on the north end of the North Carolina A&T campus.

For the Hawks, the team has earned 31 individual and relay wins this season, with freshman Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) leading the way with five wins in three different events, the 400m hurdles, the long jump and triple jump. This includes a qualification to the World Junior Championships with his 52.69 second perfrormance at the Mason Invitational. Junior Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) took home four victories, three in the shot put and one in the discus, where he reset his own school record with a toss of 56.48 meters.

Senior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) continued her strong indoor season with three wins in the outdoor season. Evans earned one win in three separate events, the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes. Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinnini (Malaga, Spain) won two 1500 meter races this spring, and three Hawks, senior shot putter Shawnata Young (Temple Hills, Md.), senior high jumper Rico Taylor (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman high jumper Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.) each picked up a victory in their respective events.



The Hawks also found success from their relay teams, as they won five races during the outdoor season. The team of Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.), sophomores Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s, Jamaica) and Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.) and junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up two relay wins in the 4x400 relay. A trio of Hawk seniors, Javon Spencer (Montego Bay, Jamaica), Ramone Waite (Kingston, Jamaica), and Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, Md.) won two relay races, along with Taylor in the 4x100 and Kerr in the 4x400 relays.
