PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, baseball early signees, men’s basketball receives nomination, indoor track & field strong performances, weekend results, and more.

Let’s go:


Last Thursday (12/5), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team announced their four early signees for the 2014-15 season. The group consists of two outfielders, an infielder, and a pitcher. The Hawks signed the following: Scott Bean (Harveys Lake, Pa.); Quenton Hamrick (New Castle, Del.); Grayson Trower (Chesterfield, Va.); and Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Va.).

In February, the Hawks begin their 2013-14 campaign in Tampa, Fla. where they will face South Florida.


Last Monday (12/2), senior center Francis Ezeiru (Enugu, Nigeria) was named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) UMES Athlete of the Week, along with women’s basketball Alexis Udoji, for the first time this season. On Nov. 26th, Ezeiru recorded his first-career double-double against Navy, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds.

On that same day (12/2), the Hawks fell to the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), 64-59, despite a career-high, 28 points, from freshman guard Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.). Senior forward Troy Snyder (Chicago, Ill.) also had an outstanding performance as he tallied eight points and 12 boards in the loss.

The next day (12/3), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Allstate Insurance Company announced their 2014 Allstate NABC Good Works Team and UMES’ junior forward Ishaq Pitt (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was among those nominated. In three seasons, Pitt has excelled in the classroom and community as he was named to the 2012-13 NABC Honors Court and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Commissioners All-Academic Team.

On Dec. 15th, the men’s team heads west to face Oregon State University. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m. (EST)


On Dec. 2nd, sophomore forward/center Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) won the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week award, alongside men’s basketball Francis Ezeiru, for the first time this season after her performance versus Lincoln (Pa.). On Nov. 26th, Udoji registered her second double-double on the season as she tallied 13 points and 15 rebounds in the victory over the Lions.

The next day (12/3), the women’s basketball team came up short to Monmouth University, 67-65, despite outscoring the opposition in the second half, 37-31. Four Lady Hawks were in double-figures led by Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) scoring 13 points. Udoji recorded her fifth-career double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) notched 12 points and TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) came off the bench to score 10 points in the loss.

Last Saturday night (12/7), UMES fell to the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University (ODU), 82-57, despite keeping the game close in the second half until ODU’s late surge would give them the victory. Sweeney recorded 18 points and six boards while Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) had 10 points and a team-high five assists. Udoji registered eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

This Sunday (12/15), the Lady Hawks travel to Norman, Okla. to square off against #17 Oklahoma. Game-time is 2:00 p.m. (EST)


Last Friday (12/6), UMES hosted the first of two home matches this season as the Hawks won a variety of events at the Coach O Invitational inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.) won the 500-meter race whereas freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) took the mile race. In the field events, freshman Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) placed first in the long-jump while junior Devin Wynn (Baltimore, Md.) won the triple-jump. Juniors Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and Rico Duncan (Cheveny, Md.) placed first and second, respectively, in the shot-put.

The track team will host the UMES HS/Collegiate Invite inside the Hytche Athletic Center on Jan. 4th. The meet time is to be announced later.


Last Tuesday (12/3), the women’s indoor track & field had a strong performance at the Navy Lid Lifter as the team placed in the top-5 in several events throughout the meet, led by Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica), Shantel Lucious (Newark, N.J.), and Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.). Evans placed first in the 200-meter dash with a 24.41 time while Lucious and Chappell finished first and second, respectively, in the high-jump.

On Dec. 6th, the Lady Hawks nearly swept the field of mid-distance events at the Coach O Invitational inside the Hytche Athletic Center, winning the 500-meter and 800-meter runs. Sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s Jamaica) captured first in the 500-meter race and freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) won the 800-meter. Evans secured the 60-meter dash and Chappell was victorious in the high-jump event.

On Jan. 4th, the track team will host the UMES HS/Collegiate Invite inside the Hytche Athletic Center. The meet time is to be announced later.
