PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Athletic Hall of Fame member Dawnette Douglas, a track and field star for the university in the 1990s, will be recognized by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as a Distinguished Alumni during the conference’s annual basketball tournament. Mrs. Douglas will be recognized during halftime of the 8:00pm game on Thursday, March 13th at the Norfolk Score Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dawnette arrived in Princess Anne in 1989 and competed in track & field for the Hawks during her time here. She etched her name in the history books as the first female student-athlete from UMES to compete in the Olympics.  Douglas ran in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona for her home country of Bermuda, competing in the 100 & 200 meter dashes.  Her contributions to the school however, go beyond the Olympics.

Her freshman campaign Douglas posted a 12:51 time in the 100 meter dash at Towson, a team best that year.  Douglas is the school and conference championship record holder in the indoor 55-meter dash, a record she set in 1993 at the MEAC Championships in a time of 6.5 seconds.  The event was retired ten years later, leaving her record forever unmatched.  She also set a school record as part of the women’s 4 x 200 outdoor relay team (1:36.50) set at the prestigious Penn Relays in 1994, Douglas’ first year in graduate school.

For her efforts, UMES captured the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship, held at Florida A&M in the 1991-92 season.

Dawnette was inducted into the UMES Athletic Hall of Fame on February 14th, one of six inductees this season, including men’s track athlete Clayton Nichols, who competed alongside Dawnette in 1993 and 1994. She will be honored by the MEAC as the Hawks’ representative for Distinguished Alumni. The halftime ceremony will also honor one Distinguished Alumni from each MEAC member institution.
