Feb. 17, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—UMES indoor track & field athletes Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on February 18th. This is the fifth time Simon has been named to this award and the second time for Evans.

Both athletes had stellar performances at the MEAC Championships this past weekend in Landover, Maryland. Along with a second place finish in the weight throw, Simon took home his fourth record of the indoor season, setting the MEAC record in the shot put with a distance of 18.35 meters. The new top mark beat out the previous record of 18.01 meters set by Morgan State’s Tyron Benjamin back in 2011, and Simon’s efforts were recognized by the MEAC as their top Male Field Performer during the Championships. Over the course of the season, Dillon has earned eighth first place finishes and two MEAC Player of the Week awards.

Evans did not quite take home the awards that Simon did, but her efforts were also worth recognition. The Jamaican native won the 60 meter preliminaries on Friday, and followed that with a win during the finals on Saturday. Evans qualified for the finals beating out nineteen other athletes with a time of 7.44, and topped that time with a 7.41 second performance the following day, winning the finals race against a field of seven other runners. Gayon also finished fourth in the 200 meter dash finals with a time of 24.69 seconds. The win in the 60 meter dash is the fourth individual victory for Evans this season.

Dillon and Gayon will compete in the Boston Fast Track meet on March 2nd, before going back to Boston for the IC4A Championships the following weekend.
