NEW YORK, N.Y. — In every meet this season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has registered at least one win. Whether it be in the dash, the relay, or the field event, the Hawks have compiled 31 wins and three record performances. This past Saturday, the team added four more wins and a new record in various events at the Columbia Invitational in New York City.

Junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) finished first in the 60 meter dash finals with her time of 7.52 meters. The finish marked the fourth win for Evans, with three individual victories and one in the relay. Freshman Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) took the top distance in the long jump, with 7.18 meters, his sixth victory this season. The men’s 4x400 relay team of senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.), senior Ramone Waite (Kingston, Jamaica), Kerr, and senior Javon Spencer (Montego Bay, Jamaica) won the event with a time of 3:15.05, making it the fourth UMES relay win this year.

The fourth UMES win came from junior Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica), who won his seventh event this year with a first place finish in the shot put. This included a Navy field house record of 18.64 meters of January 11th that fell just shy of the school record. Last Saturday, Simon eclipsed the school record, throwing for a distance of 18.81 meters, edging out Kimani Korton’s 2007 record of 18.72 meters. The school record is the third Simon has acquired this year, going along with his field house record and a school record in the weight throw that he has topped four times this season alone.

Other top performances include Chatman, who in addition to his contribution in the relay win registered a third place finish in the 200 meter dash (21.99 seconds) and a fourth place finish  in the 400 meter (48.12). Spencer also had a top three finish in the 200 meters with his time of 21.98 seconds, just ahead of Chatman. Two field athletes took top three marks as well, with junior Rico Duncan (Cheveny, Md.) finishing third in the shot put at 17.86 meters, and senior George Chandler (Birdsnest, Va.), who also finished third in the weight throw with his distance of 17.40 meters.

On the women’s side, Evans also earned a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with her time of 24.49 seconds. Junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.46 seconds, and graduate student Geranda Williams (Waldorf, Md.) finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.79 meters.

The UMES track team will travel to New York for the final time this weekend, as they look to continue their winning ways in the two-day Collegiate New Balance meet.
