NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the third time this season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s indoor track team won the 4x400 relay race at the Captains Invite, hosted by Christopher Newport University last weekend. The team also collected a couple of top three victories along the way during the two-day event, and freshman Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) earned her marks during the pentathlon.

In the relay race, the team of frehman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.), sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s, Jamaica), junior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica), and freshman Taylor Folk (Baltimore, Md.) finished first with a time of 3:56.46, beating out six schools from three states to win. Furthermore, the UMES “B” team of junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), freshman Jasmine Sampson (Coatesville, Pa.), senior Latasha Moore (Silver Spring, Md.), and sophomore Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.) managed a third place finish with a time of 4:02.32.

Other top finishers in track included Sampson, who recorded a fifth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.79, and Hemley, who placed second in the 1000 meter dash with her time of 3:07.65. In the 800 meter run, three Lady Hawks—Kelly, Wilmot-Francis, and junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.)—finished third through fifth in the event, respectively. Kelly finished with a time of 2:21.94; Wilmot-Francis earned a time of 2:23.52, and Mars finished at 2:24.21.



There were several top five finishers in the field events as well. Two Lady Hawks—freshmen Shauntel Lucious (Newark, N.J.) and Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.)—earned high marks at the high jump. Lucious finished third with a height of 1.63 meters, while Chappell finished fourth with a height of 1.58 meters. Junior Nancy Yao (Riverdale, Md.) finished fifth in the triple jump with her season-best distance of 10.75 meters.

Freshman Shelasia Leitch competed in the Indoor Pentathlon at the event, and posted high marks and times in several events. Leitch placed fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with her time of 9.33 seconds, and added a fifth place spot in the shot put with a distance of 9.27 meters. Overall, Shelasia finished 8th of 13 athletes with a score of 2811.

This meet is the last weekend that the men and women on the indoor track team competed separately. The two groups will join together again as they head to New York on Saturday for the Columbia Meet.
