Jan. 27, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—UMES indoor track athlete Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and bowling junior Mariana Alvarado (Leon, Mexico) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 28h. This is fourth time Simon has been named to this award, and the first time for Alvarado.

Junior Dillon Simon set two records this past weekend at the Navy Invitational. In the weight throw, Dillon shattered his own previous school record with a distance of 19.61 meters. The mark qualified for the IC4A Championships and narrowly missed the Navy Fieldhouse record of 20.07 meters. Simon did set a field house record in the shot put, throwing for a distance of 18.64 meters. That mark broke the record of 18.31 meters, set in 2012. Along with the records, Simon finished first in both events.

Alvarado shined as the bowling team won the tournament at Kutztown Invite in Reading, Pennsylvania. In six individual games, Mariana averaged 211.7 pins per game with a high game of 247. However, it was the Baker games that set Alvarado apart. Mariana, who serves as anchor, bowling the 5th and 10th frames, rolled three consecutive strikes in the championship game, earning the title by a single pin. Over the course of the season, Alvarado has averaged 204 pins per game in individuals and has contributed greatly to the team’s 33-0 Baker record.

The track team travels to New York for the Columbia Meet this Saturday, while the bowling team will travel to Arlington, Texas for the Prairie View A&M Invitational.
