Feb. 16, 2013
LANDOVER, Md. - The Lady Hawks indoor track & field team took runner-up honors at the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships on Saturday, cutting into the Hampton Pirates lead, but not quite overcoming them to capture the title. The men used the final day to drastically improve their finish as they climbed from tenth to sixth to secure a top half performance in the league.
Imani Cox and Petra Kubesova earned the women's Outstanding Performer Honors for the field and running accolades respectively. Cox, who won the weight throw on day two, won gold in the shot put on the final day to record 20 points for the Lady Hawks while Kubesova posted 28.5 points to the tally. Kubesova won the 5,000-meter run and set a MEAC record and earned gold in the 3000-meter run to account for 20 of her points. She posted a bronze medal outing in the mile run and was a member of the women's DMR team that took gold and recorded 10 points, earning her 2.5 individually. The team posted 131 total points, nine and half points shy of Hampton's winning 140.5.
Kubesova's 9:57.64 broke an 11-year old mark in the 3,000-meter run held previously by Agatha Gitudndu of Norfolk State. While she earned 10 points, Hampton placed three to match her output and maintain their winning point total. Cox tossed a 15.04 to easily win the shot put by almost half a meter over teammate Lexia Robinson who took second with a toss of 14.57 meters.
Geranda Williams also did her part, jumping 12.30 meters in the triple jump to easily secure gold over Florida A&M's Kinnesha Jones' 12.06 meters. Jazmine Holland also posted five points in the pole vault.
The women's 4 x 400 relay took second to Hampton, allowing them to extend their lead by two more points. The silver-winning quartet of Emile Ducados, Annis Mars, Gayon Evans and Olympian Lenora Guion-Firmin trailed just .32 seconds with a time of 3:42.50.
Guion-Firmin and Evans went second and third in the 200-meter dash finals with times of 24.27 and 24.30 respectively. They combined for 14 points, but Hampton won the event, and took sixth, picking up 13 points of their own.
Evans won the 60-meter dash with a 7.40 to add another 10 points to the tally.
Also earning top honors was the men's Dillon Simon, who shared the Outstanding Field Performer honors. He accounted for 15 points on his own, 10 for the shot put gold on the final day and five for taking fourth in the wright throw. Simon threw an impressive 16.9 meters to take first.
His 15 points went a long way to the Hawks' 49 total. Norfolk State took gold with 152.5 points, well ahead of Hampton's 85 second-place points. UMES also got eight points in the 4 x 400 relay taking silver in the event with a time of 3:18.50. The squad saw Kraig Webb, Aaron Chatman, Andre Walsh and Zavior Brown just edged out third place Florida A&M by 15 tenths of a second.
Walsh would add another 14 points with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash and a third-place in the 60-meter dash. He ran a 21.55, just .23 of a second out of first in the 200 while posting a 6.86 in the 60-meters.
Basil Melek also added three points to the total with a sixth place finish in the 3,000 meter run.
The competition, held at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md. featured all 13 of the MEAC schools. The conference handed out all conference honors at the event. Kubesova, Ducados, Mars, Shantol Hemley, Cox, Williams, and Evans were all named All-MEAC First-Team performers on the women's side.
Robinson, Guion-Firmin, Ducados, Mars and Evans also garnered All-MEAC Second-Team honors. Ducados, Shawnata Young, Kubesova and Evans were named All-MEAC Third-Team.
