Princess Anne, Md.--Owen Cain matched a 20-year old University of Maryland Eastern Shore record in the triple jump. Cain jumped a 15.06-meter distance in the Hawks recent 2012 New Balance Collegiate Invitational. The previous record was set by Edward Sapp in 1991. Three UMES records and three top 10 finishes were set by the men's and women's team.

Cain placed 11th overall facing athletes from three nationally ranked top 10 teams. Teammate Denvil Ruan finished with a jump of 14.49m, a season's best jump. Rico Taylor took second place in the high jump with a season's best of 2.04m.

Ackeem Smith, Basil Melek and Zavior Brown had amazing finishes in their respective events. Smith had a personal and school record of in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.81 seconds. The previous record was set in 2006 by Dwayne Robinson.

Melek had a personal record time of 14:50.26 in the 5,000-meter run, while Brown had a top 10 finish in the 800m run of 1:51.79. Andre Walsh and Marcus Wallace finished with a top 10 finish and season's best time, respectively, in the 200m dash championship.

Walsh finished in 21.31, while Wallace finished with a 21.74.

The women's team had a school record set by Cynthia Anais in the 800m run, while Vanessa Henry had a top 10 finish in the weight throw.

Anais posted a personal and UMES record time of 2:05.66 in the 800. Teammates Emilie Ducados and Eunice Jones finished in 2:13.41 and 2:14.97, respectively. Henry tossed an 18.55m distance for the Hawks.



Lenora Firmin-Guion had a personal record time of 54.46 in the 400m dash. Teammates Melina Gallas and Annis Mars finished in 57.64 and 58.17, respectively. UMES is currently seventh in the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Hawks will compete Feb. 11 in the Millrose Games in New York, N.Y.
