PRINCESS ANNE, Md.--UMES track & field athletes Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominaca) and Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on December 17th. This is the first time the award has been given to both athletes this year.

Simon, a sophomore, excelled in the shot put and weight throw events at the Coach O Collegiate Invitational at the Hytche Center in Princess Anne on December 6th. Dillon placed first in both events, setting a school record for weight throw at 16.71 meters while finishing only one meter short of the school record in shot put, with his distance of 17.72 meters. His record mark in the weight throw beat the previous record, held by Marcus Simon since 2010, by 0.19 meters.

Junior Gayon Evans also had a record-breaking performance at the Coach O Invitational. After a first-place qualifying finish in the 60 meter dash preliminaries, Evans won the final with a time of 7.34 seconds, breaking a record set by Monique Hawkins in 2011 by half a second. Over the course of the indoor track season, Evans has also a first place finish in the 200 meter dash, which she earned at the Navy Lid-Lifter in Annapolis, Md. earlier this month.

Simon, Evans, and the entire indoor track team resume their season in early 2014 when they host their final home meet of the season. That will take place on January 4th, as they host the UMES HS/College Invitational. Start times and a list of events will be released closer to the event date.
