HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Thanksgiving holiday provided a break for several University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletic programs but two teams still participated in action. The men's basketball team, who recently completed a six-game road trip, dropped each decision this past week while the women fell in a nail biter to Canisius College. The volleyball team found out its opponent this past Sunday, as the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions will take on the University of California-Los Angeles in their NCAA Tournament debut.
The men's basketball team participated in four contests this week.
The Hawks fell in all four matchups but provided a valiant in each, including a hard fought loss to Portland State University this past Sunday. UMES began the week with a 90-52 loss to Kansas State University on Tuesday. The Hawks then traveled to Laramie, Wyo., to compete in the Jim Thorpe Classic, where they posted a first-round loss to Louisiana Tech University, 73-54. UMES completed its six-game road trip with consecutive losses to the University of Wyoming (73-43) and PSU (79-69).
The men were led on the week by junior Percy Woods, who finished with 60 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists over four games. He posted a big effort against Wyoming as he had 18 points and five rebounds.
Woods' efforts allowed him to being distinguished as this week's men's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week.
The women's basketball team dropped a 45-43 decision to Canisius this past Monday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The Hawks, who trailed 28-23 at halftime, limited Canisius to a 7-for-25 performance from the floor in the second half to come to within one point late in the game. The women would ultimately fall in the contest, but saw several student-athletes record outstanding efforts.
Junior Chelsea Sanders was the top performer for the women as she posted 15 points, eight rebounds and one block. She was also 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and had one steal. Seniors Caitlyn Dillard and Amber Cook each had six rebounds while senior Kwinnyata Mercer chipped in with nine points.
Sanders' efforts allowed her to being distinguished as this week's women's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week.
Fresh off their first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, the volleyball team found it where it will be headed for their NCAA Tournament debut. The Hawks travel to ninth-seeded University of California-Los Angeles in the first round of on Friday, Dec. 2 at 11 p.m. EST (8 p.m. PT).
The pod, which is hosted by UCLA, features four teams. The other matchup at UCLA features California State University-Long Beach and University of California-San Diego. The 64-team bracket was released on ESPNU this past Saturday.
Freshman Saitaua Iosia continued to earn awards for her strong performance this season, as she was named the COBRA Magazine East Region Player of the Year on Thanksgiving Day.
UPCOMING WEEK (Nov. 28-Dec. 5)
The bowling team will participate in the MEAC Northern Division meet in Baltimore, Md., this weekend when they open up play on Saturday, Dec. 3 at noon. The meet is scheduled to last three days.
The women's basketball team has two contests this week as the Hawks travel to Washington D.C., to face American University on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. The Hawks will then return home to open up their MEAC schedule with a bout against Delaware State University on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m.
The men's basketball team will host both of their matchups this week. The Hawks host the United States Naval Academy on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. before opening up their MEAC schedule with a meeting against Delaware State on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.
The volleyball team hits the road for its NCAA Tournament first-round game. The Hawks are set to square off with the University of California-Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 2 at 11 p.m. EST (8 p.m. PT).
