Former Hawk Athletics staffer Aiken passes away
Oct. 21, 2016

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -

The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks athletic family lost a “True Hawk,” when former athletics staffer and member of the university’s class of 1985, Gail B. Aiken died Oct. 11.

"Gail Aiken was a true Hawk. I have met hundreds of alumni in my time at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and I can say that no one loved our university more, especially athletics," said Director of Athletics Keith Davidson. "She knew every Hawk or knew of them. She remembered games, stats, events and legends like no other. Her passion was contagious and it rubbed off on many new Hawks each year she was on campus. They looked to her like a mother and she took the opportunity to coach life lessons and ways to embody the spirit of the Hawk. Because of her, Hawk Pride is stronger today, but with her passing, it will never be quite the same."

Aiken served on and led numerous committees that helped to move the university and Hawk Athletic forward; was the speaker at several commencements, and Hall of Excellence and Hall of Fame ceremonies. She was an Eastern Shore athletics historian for 40 years and was responsible for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hall of Fame atrium design. She also served as a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and was a lifetime member of the UMES National Alumni Association.

Services for Aiken are being held Saturday, October 22, at 10 a.m. at Upper Room Baptist Church, 7236 Ogontz Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19138.
