HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS
Oct. 10, 2011
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - This past week represented the most successful week of the fall sports season to date for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletic program as the Hawks won three volleyball matches and claimed top honors in the men's and women's cross country events. The results recorded for all three programs were seen in the individual format as well as several student-athletes put together outstanding performances that may lead to consideration for numerous weekly awards.
The UMES volleyball team continued where it left off last week as the Hawks upped their winning streak to seven games courtesy of victories over Delaware State University, Coppin State University and Morgan State University. It was the second consecutive week that UMES has gone undefeated and the Hawks have remained in the win column for the past 16 days.
The women opened up their 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule on Tuesday when the Hawks thrashed Delaware State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-6, 25-13). UMES then followed up its work with a 3-1 decision (21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-11) over Coppin State and a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) over Morgan State. The squad has lost only two sets in its past six games and has five shutouts so far this season.
UMES had several big performers this week with freshman Saitaua Iosia once again leading the way. Iosia registered 13 kills in two consecutive games while registering a team-high 36 kills. She upped her performance with 29 digs as well. The Hawks were paced by the efforts of junior Maline Vaitai (31 kills), junior Ndidi Ibe (17 kills) and freshman Jessie Vicic (105 assists).
The UMES cross country teams sure have enjoyed competing at Delaware State University hosted meets this season as for the second consecutive time this year, the Hawks claimed top honors. The women finished 27 points ahead of the second-place hosts while the men won by 15 points. The teams also swept the weekly PRMC UMES Athletes of the Week when junior Basil Melek and senior Eunice Jones were honored.
Melek led the charge for the men's team with a first-place finish in a time of 25:06. Junior Zavior Brown finished two places behind Melek when he finished in third (26:26). The UMES pack was paced by senior Shadrack Maritim (7th, 2813), sophomore Donohue Williams (15th, 30:15) and junior Codjo Gbedo (16th, 30:15). The performance of the Hawks' three, four and five runners were the difference in the victory as they raced past several Morgan State runners.
Jones improved upon her second-place finish at the last DSU hosted event in September with a convincing victory in the women's race. She finished over 30 faster than the closest competitor as she has stamped her name amongst the elite women's runners in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season. Her performance was followed by the top-10 finishes of senior Cynthia Anais (2nd place, 18:39.35), sophomore Hana Jiraskova (6th, 19:23.98) and junior Emilie Ducados (10th, 20:14.16). The top-5 was rounded out by junior Melina Gallas, who finished in 12th in 21:31.00.
The golf team was idle this week.
UPCOMING WEEK (Oct. 10-Oct. 17)
