PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The 2011-12 athletic season at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has officially begun! Classes in Princess Anne are in session and the UMES student-athletes are in competition. This past weekend, volleyball flew to Tampa, Florida to play in the USF Invitational while cross country looked to defend their home field at the Hampton Inn Salisbury North/UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational.

UMES Volleyball started the season in the USF Invitational, going 1-3 in the three-day event. After a loss to Bethune-Cookman 3-1 on Friday, the Hawks came back from falling in the first two sets to win over host South Florida 3-2 the next day. Immediately after their victory, UMES was defeated in a tough match to Bowling Green 3-2, followed by a Sunday loss to Eastern Kentucky 3-0.

Freshman outside hitter Saitaua Iosia (Long Beach, Calif.) was the lone Hawk named to the All-Tournament Team, leading the team in kills every match with double digits each time, totaling 55 with 39 digs as well. Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) notched 31 kills with a hitting percentage of .274, adding eight total blocks.

The UMES men's and women's cross country teams ran in their first event on Saturday, the Hampton Inn Salisbury North/UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational in Princess Anne. The men finished in third place while the women took fifth.

On the men's side, junior Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) got seventh in the individual standings with a time of 25:53.08. In 21st place was UMES newcomer junior Zavior Brown (Middletown, N.Y.) had a time of 27:33.94. For the women, senior Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) had the team's best finish at 20:28.23, finishing 38th overall. Second for the Hawks was Hana Jiraskova (Lanskroun, Czech Republic), crossing the finish line at 21:07.65, good for 55th overall.

Navy took first place in both the men's and women's competition with 31 and 15 points respectively.

The volleyball team hits the road again to Smithfield, Rhode Island for the Bryant Invitational, playing in three matches in two days. On Friday, September 9th, the Hawks play tournament host Bryant at 4:00 p.m. UMES plays two matches on Saturday, September 10th, taking on Holy Cross at 10:00 a.m. and Harvard at 5:00 p.m. All matches are set to be broadcast on the Hawks Radio Network.

Cross country will go on the road for the first time as the teams head for Smyrna, Delaware to compete in the Delaware State Open. Both the men and women won this event last season. The men begin at 10:00 a.m. while the women start at 10:45 a.m.
