April 21, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—Senior baseball outfielder Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) and freshman softball catcher and third baseman Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 22nd. Campbell is being named for the second time this year, while Schnyder is being named for the first time this year.

Both athletes contributed strong offensive performances in games this past weekend. Schnyder paced the Lady Hawks with a 5-for-8 (.571) weekend, including an RBI against Hampton. The freshman has played in 36 games, starting 31, switching between the infield and catcher. Over that span, she is hitting .246 with an on-base percentage of .402. Campbell had an even stronger performance in a four game split with Delaware State in Dover. Byron went 11-for-16 (.687) with 10 RBIs, four runs scored, two walks and two homeruns. His finest performances came Sunday with a 4-for-5 game where he scored two runs, doubled and homered, and ultimately drove in five runs. The effort raised Campbell’s average to .381 from .333 in four games, with 2 HR’s and 24 RBI’s on the season.

Campbell and the baseball team will travel to Georgetown for a Tuesday doubleheader before playing a home game against George Washington on Wednesday. Schnyder and the softball team will face George Mason on Wednesday in Fairfax before a road weekend series in Baltimore against Morgan State.
