PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- On April 6, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generally recognizes student-athletes for their accomplishments in three aspects: competition; classroom; and community; thus, appointing National STUDENT-Athlete Day. On this day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) showed their love by providing snacks for current UMES student-athletes. The four-hour event took place inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

"It's a start of a new tradition," said Talareah Campbell, Academic Advisor/Co-Student Services Coordinator. "It's important to show how much we appreciate the student-athletes. We applaud them for their efforts in competition, but also inside the classroom and throughout the community."

National STUDENT-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.

"We really appreciate it," said senior women's bowler Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tolima, Colombia), who is also President on the S.A.A.C. Executive Board. "It's really nice what the administration did. They went out their way and we definitely appreciate it."

The NCAA grants financial assistance and administrative support to the NCAS by providing colleges and universities with nomination forms for the Giant Steps awards and other pertinent materials to promote National STUDENT-Athlete Day.

UMES S.A.A.C. team's mission is to enhance the total athletic experience for the student-athlete. S.A.A.C. strives to promote a positive student-athlete image, while creating a uniting force within Hawk Athletics. S.A.A.C.'s motto is "Beyond the Wall," stating that S.A.A.C. goes beyond the walls of our University and make a strong impact in the community.
