PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Seniors Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and Belen Benitez (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) have been name the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of March 11. This is the fifth time this year that Walsh has been recognized with the award, which is the most of any UMES student-athlete in 2012-13. Benitez collects the distinction for the first time.

Walsh collects the award after he missed the eight-man finals but showed well in the preliminary round broadcast live on ESPN3. He officially finished 15th with a time of 21.51, just sixth tenths of a second from making the final round. Walsh will earn 2nd-Team All-America honors for his performance in the event, awarded by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Benitez had a big week for the softball team at the Hampton University Tournament. She posted three extra base hits with two doubles and one triple with six RBI. She hit a bases clearing triple to help UMES achieve its largest single-inning run total in five years in UMES’ 11-4 win over Siena. She also posted one hit against Canisius, before going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI in the Lady Hawks’ loss to Delaware. Benitez also combined to pitch nearly five innings on the hill.
