PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This Monday (03/10), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men’s & women’s basketball teams open the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament against the Spartans of Norfolk State University inside the Norfolk Scope Arena, located in Norfolk, Va. The women are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (EST), followed by the men at 6:30 p.m. (EST)

For the Lady Hawks, they enter as the eleventh-seed with an 8-20 overall record (4-12 MEAC), including last night’s thrilling overtime victory over Delaware State University (DSU), while the Norfolk State ladies come in 12-15 (8-8 MEAC) on the season, earning the No. 6 spot. This season, NSU swept the regular-season series versus Maryland Eastern Shore, 2-0. The winner meets No. 3 Coppin State University (CSU) on Thursday, March 13th at noon (EST).

Other notes on the women’s side, the Lady Pirates of Hampton University secured the top spot as they finished the regular-season 25-4 (16-0 MEAC) whereas North Carolina A&T (NCAT) took the second-seed after a 23-5 (13-3 MEAC) campaign. For the Hawks, the men comes in as the thirteenth-seed with a 6-23 overall record (4-12 MEAC), including last night’s win over DSU, while the Spartans enter 16-13 (11-5 MEAC) on the season, receiving the No. 4 spot in the tournament. This season, NSU swept UMES in the regular-season, 2-0. The winner after Monday’s contest will face the winner of the Savannah State University (SSU) and South Carolina State University (SCSU) match-up on Thursday, March 13th at 8:00 p.m. (EST)

Other notes on the men’s side, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) locked up the No. 1 spot whereas Hampton and Morgan State University (MSU) wrapped-up the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Click Here to view the 2013-14 MEAC Men’s Basketball Championship Bracket.

The MEAC finals will take place on Saturday, March 15th. The women’s final begins 3:00 p.m. (EST) and the men’s final starts 6:00 p.m. (EST). Both championship final games will be aired on ESPNU. The winners of both brackets will received an automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament, which begins later this month.
