PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week were announced today and senior Valentina Collazos (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Kevin Mays (Queens, N.Y.) have been named the recipients for the week of Jan. 28. This is the first honor of the year for Collazos, while Mays takes it down for the second time in three weeks.

Collazos guided the women to a first-place finish at the Kutztown Invitational this past weekend. She watched from the sidelines on day one, but came off the bench on the second day to knock down 1,076 pins. Her average on the day was a 215.2, good for a 50th place finish in the 188 player field.  She concluded her effort in the tournament in Sunday’s baker play, where she teamed up with four other Lady Hawks to bowl a perfect game of 300.

Mays led the men’s basketball team in its 55-54 loss at Florida A&M this past Saturday. The freshman tallied the only double-double of the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line and had three assists and one steal in a game-high 39 minutes. Mays nearly won the game for the Hawks in the final seconds of the game, but his shot from the right-side fell just off target.
