HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS (JANUARY 20TH THROUGH 26TH)

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, golf released spring schedule, weekend results, and more, including Fifty Shades of Maroon & Gray.
Let’s get started:
Last Saturday (01/25), former University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men’s basketball star, Hillary Haley, recently signed a contract to play professional basketball for the Aalborg Vikings of the Danish Basketligaen. Haley is the second UMES player to sign a professional contract in the past year as Tyler Hines recently inked a deal in Greece. The Fort Washington, Md., product averaged 11.5PPG and 4.3RPG in his three years as a Hawk and named to the 2011 All-MEAC Second Team and the 2010 All-MEAC Tournament Team.
On the same day (01/25), the men’s basketball fell to Bethune-Cookman, 69-63, despite holding a seven-point lead at halftime. UMES had three players in double-figures as freshman Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior Isaac Smith III (Chicago, Ill.) each had a team-high 12 points. Junior KyRee Jones (Indianapolis, Ind.) chipped in with 11 points and dished out three assists while Francis Ezeiru (Enugu, Nigeria) had eight points and seven points in 22 minutes of action.
This Saturday (02/01), the men’s team returns to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to host the Aggies of North Carolina A&T University. Tip-off is 4:00 p.m. (EST)
On Tuesday (01/21), women’s basketball Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) was named UMES Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athlete of the Week, along with Jared Kerr (men’s track & field), for the first time this season after her performance against conference rival, Howard University. Claybrooks posted a double-double, 14 points and 14 boards, in a losing effort.
On Jan. 25th, the women’s basketball rallied late, but was unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University (BCU), 78-70. Junior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) notched a team-high 17 points while Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) recorded another double-double on the season, 13 points and 11 rebounds. Other notable Hawk performances included Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) scoring a season-high 10 points while Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) added 11 points off the bench in a losing effort.
On Feb. 1st, the Lady Hawks return home to the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center to face North Carolina A&T. Game-time is slated for 2:00 p.m. (EST)
Last weekend (01/24-26), the UMES women's bowling team competed at the Kutztown Invite and got back in the swing of things by going a perfect 6-0 on day one and finished fourth on the day. All-American Mariana Alvarado (Leon, Mexico) anchored the Hawk attack on the first day. On two day, the team went 3-3 and remained in fourth-place. On this day, Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tomila, Columbia) averaged over 210 to help the Hawks maintain fourth in the Kutztown Invite. On the final day, UMES took home their third Kutztown title as they went 3-0, defeating Vanderbilt, Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU), and Wisconsin-Whitewater. After the conclusion of the tournament, Alvarado earned Kutztown Invite All-Tournament.
This weekend (01/31-02/02), the Hawks head to Arlington, Texas to participate in the Prairie View Invitational. The action begins Friday at 10:00 a.m. (EST)
Last Thursday (01/23), the golf team released its 2014 spring schedule where they will compete in five tournaments across a four-month span. Seniors Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) and Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) will guide the Hawks this season.
Late February (02/23-02/24), UMES opens the spring at the Frito-Lay/Taco Bell Invitational in Philadelphia, Miss. and concludes the season at the PGA Minority Championship, located in Port St. Lucie, Fla. (05/09-05/11).
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
On Jan. 17th, the men’s track & field team had strong performance at the Great Dane Classic in New York City where junior Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) placed second in the shot put with an 18.01 distance. Other notable Hawk performances included freshman Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) earning his fourth win of the season as he won the long-jump with a 7.38-meter distance.
On Tuesday (01/21), Kerr received his first UMES PRMC Athlete of the Week award, alongside Ashleigh Claybrooks (women’s basketball), for his performance at the Great Dane Classic.
This Saturday (02/01), the track team heads back to the Big Apple, New York City, to compete in the Columbia Meet. The start time is to be announced later.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
On Jan. 17th, the women’s track & field team competed in the Great Dane Classic and saw multiple Hawks finish in the top-10 in their respective events, including Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) earning sixth place in the 400-meter. Other notable Hawks included Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.), Jasmine Sampson (Coatesville, Pa.), and Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) placing sixth in the distance medley team of Folk.
On Feb. 1st, the Hawks return to New York City to participate in the Columbia Meet. The meet time will be released at a later date.
FIFTY SHADES OF MAROON & GRAY
UMES athletic department announced its tenth featured Hall of Fame member in Fifty Shades of Maroon & Gray, James “Squeakie” Lesane. The spotlight continues its countdown to the 2014 UMES Hall of Fame induction, which takes place Feb. 14th.
Lesane stands as one of the best wide receivers to ever play for the Maroon & Gray as he compiled 99 career receptions for 1,450 receiving yards. He also amassed 15 receiving touchdown while averaging 14.6 yards-per-reception. In 2004, Lesane was inducted into the UMES Hall of Fame and ranks among the best Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) players of all-time.
