Simon top his competition in the shot put and weight throw last Saturday

Jan. 6, 2014

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—UMES indoor track athletes Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and Shauntel Lucious (Newark, N.J.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 7th. This is the second time Simon has received this honor, while Lucious has been named for the first time in her athletic career.

Simon, a sophomore, dominated his two events at the UMES Invitational last Saturday here in Princess Anne. In the shot put, Dillon narrowly missed the school record as he threw for a top distance of 18.11 meters. That mark took first place in the competition, besting the second place finisher by nearly two meters. Even more impressive was Simon’s performance in the weight throw, where he beat out his previous school record with a distance of 17.28 meters.

Freshman Shauntel Lucious also registered two top finishes at the UMES invite. Lucious tied for first in the high jump with two fellow freshmen UMES athletes, Evelyn Chappell and Shelasia Leitch, with a height of 1.65 meters. Lucious also captured the pole vault with a height of 2.15 meters. Lucious will added these two top finishes to her performance at the Navy Lid-Lifter last December, where she won the high jump with an equal height of 1.65 meters.

Both athletes will travel to Navy for meets later this week, but on separate dates. Simon and the men’s team will travel this coming Saturday, while Lucious will be competing on Thursday. The women’s meet on Thursday is scheduled for 4pm while the men’s meet on Saturday is listed as TBA.
